Coloproctology
Proctology deals with diseases of the rectum and pelvic floor.
Prof. Hetzer and Dr. Gingert are nationally and internationally recognized specialists and holders of the European specialist title for coloproctology. The following sections present some key topics.
Hemorrhoids
The hemorrhoidal ligament is found in all higher organisms. It is located at the transition from the anal canal to the rectum. Enlargement of the hemorrhoids leads to problems.
Anal fissure
Anal fissures are very painful tears in the anal canal. They often cause bright red bleeding.
Anal fistulas
Anal fistulas are common and usually manifest as abscesses in the anal area. They usually originate in glands located in the anal region. Fistulas are inflammatory passages that run through the tissue and can unfortunately also break through the sphincter muscles.
Fecal incontinence (sphincter suture, sacral nerve stimulation)
Fecal incontinence affects approximately 10% of the population, with an increase in older age groups. It often occurs in combination with urinary incontinence. The social limitations are enormous.
Pelvic floor weakness
This condition can be exacerbated by weak muscles, injuries, pregnancy, or previous operations. The symptoms vary depending on the severity.
Rectal prolapse
In rectal prolapse, the lower part of the intestine protrudes in front of the anus. In addition to pain, this also leads to bleeding and infections. It is not uncommon for this to cause intestinal obstruction, and patients complain of incontinence problems.
Pilonidal Sinus
The pilonidal sinus (syn. pilonidal cyst, pilonidal sinus, pilonidal cyst) originates from ingrown hairs. It is located in the anal fissure at the level of the coccyx between the buttocks.
